The gateway to Mexico could be San Ysidro's second name. The community has a strong retail sector with a large factory outlet mall. East San Ysidro Boulevard from Interstate 805 to the eastern end of Border Village Road has recently been redesigned.

San Ysidro residents said they needed more places to sit outdoors, so they chose a novel proposal by well-known San Diego artist Victor Ochoa, who designed and completed seating in four public places.

The seating areas are cast in concrete of Mesoamerican-era stepped shapes and embellished with mosaic tile. The public seating areas have their own shade: a living tree that sprouts out of the top.
