City: Normal Heights

A mostly residential neighborhood on the south rim of Mission Valley. Many homes along the valley rim have commanding views across the San Diego River and out to the ocean. Adams Avenue is the main business district area, and an annual street fair in September stretches for blocks near the large neon Normal Heights neighborhood sign.

Other events include music festivals and an antique car show. Many older homes can be found in the area which was one of San Diego's early suburbs. Nestled between Interstates 15 and 805 just south of 8 gives easy access to almost anywhere.

Noted for a large number of antique shops and used book stores. Named for the former San Diego Normal School, a teacher-education college that eventually moved from what is now the location of the San Diego Unified School District administration offices. A neighborhood of the city of San Diego. ZIP Code 92116. Population 31,892. Median income $28,111.

One of San Diego's oldest suburban neighborhoods, Normal Heights is a mostly residential neighborhood situated above the southern rim of Mission Valley directly west of Kensington. Situated between Interstate 805 and 15, the community is alive with a vibrant business district filled with an eclectic mix of antique stores, coffee shops, restaurants and used book outlets.

The local economy is nurtured by the Adams Avenue Business Association, which oversees the Adams Avenue Business Improvement District and sponsors two wildly popular two-day street gatherings, the Roots Festival and the Adams Avenue Street Fair. The classic neon Normal Heights sign that spans Adams Avenue is one of six such neighborhood signs that grace the streets of District Three communities. The community got its name from the former San Diego Normal School, a teacher-education college that used to be located at the site currently occupied by the San Diego Unified School District administration offices.
